Why the Two Weeks Before Thanksgiving Fill First

Not a scarcity pitch — arithmetic. Three weekdays, two Saturdays, and everyone hosting wants the same ones. A booking timeline that works around it.

This is not a scarcity pitch, and it is not a claim about how busy we are. It is arithmetic that applies to every cleaning company in Austin, and you can check it against any of them.

The arithmetic

Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November. Households that are hosting want the house done shortly before people arrive, which in practice means Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of that week. That is three weekdays. Some will take the Saturday before instead, which adds one more day. The Sunday before is a real option for some companies and not for others; ours are Monday to Friday 7 to 7 and Saturday 8 to 5, so Sunday is not available from us.

So the whole surface area of the peak is roughly four working days.

A deep clean of an 1,800 sq ft home is not a one-hour job, and a crew fits a finite number of homes into a working day. Multiply a finite number by four days and you have the total capacity of any given company for the most-requested slots of the year.

Now the demand side. Every household in the neighbourhood that is hosting wants one of those same four days, and they mostly decide at the same time — usually the first week of November, when the invitations are settled and somebody looks at the house.

That is the entire mechanism. Fixed supply, one narrow demand window, and everyone arriving at it in the same seven-day stretch.

What that means in practice

The Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving are the two most requested cleaning slots of the year in Austin. Not because of anything special about the work — a Thanksgiving clean is an ordinary deep clean — but because the calendar concentrates a month of demand into two days.

The knock-on effect is that the two weeks before Thanksgiving fill from the back forwards. The Wednesday goes first, then the Tuesday, then the Saturday before, and then the middle of the preceding week.

A booking timeline that works

WhenWhat to do
Late OctoberDecide whether you are hosting. If yes, book now, and take the day you actually want.
First week of NovemberBook if you have not. You can probably still choose your day.
Week of 10 NovemberRealistic last point at which a specific day is likely. Ask about the Saturday before.
Week of 17 NovemberTake what is offered. Flexibility is now doing all the work.
Thanksgiving weekConsider the week after instead.

The option nobody considers

Book the week before, not the week of.

A deep clean holds perfectly well for a week in a house that is being lived in normally. Do the deep pass on the Thursday or Friday before Thanksgiving week, then spend forty-five minutes the day before guests arrive on the four things that actually degrade: kitchen counters, the guest bathroom, the entryway, and the trash.

You get better availability, a calmer week, and a house that is in the same condition when people walk in. The only thing you lose is the feeling that it was done the day before, which nobody except you can detect.

And the other option

Book the week after.

The clean that follows a big gathering is the one that actually prevents damage — grease that has gone hard on the range hood, spills that soaked into upholstery on Thursday and set by Sunday, a refrigerator full of things nobody is going to eat. The pre-Thanksgiving clean is about how the house looks for two hours. The post-Thanksgiving clean is about what the house is like in December.

Availability the week after Thanksgiving is not a problem, because almost nobody books it. That is a gap in most people’s thinking rather than a gap in the calendar.

The short version

If you want a specific day in the week of Thanksgiving, put it on a calendar in late October. If you cannot, shift a week in either direction and take the availability. The work is identical either way, and the only thing that changes is how relaxed the week before the holiday is.
